Located in Lhaviyani Atoll, Cocoon Maldives resort was built as the first Italian design hotel in the Maldives, marking not only an incredible milestone but the beginning of a wondrous hospitality journey as well. It takes 30 minutes to reach the resort via seaplane from Velana International Airport and is 130 km from each other.

The resort opened on 26th December 2016 and is located on Ookolhufinolhu Island. Overlooking a lagoon, the island has one of the best views you can find on Maldives, with cerulean blue hues surrounding you everywhere you look. The island has a strong reef bed that is visible due to the crystal clear waters, allowing for safe exploration around the island. The interior design was done by Lago, an Italian company that wanted to blend Italian luxury and Maldivian beauty into one.

Dining Experiences in Cocoon Maldives

The Cocoon hotel is absolutely stacked with culinary options with their four restaurants and three bars. Each venue has its own charm and atmosphere, owing to the island setting it’s been built on.

Their main restaurant is known as OCTOPUS and serves international cuisine in a buffet style for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They host themed nights on a weekly basis, ranging from Maldivian Night, Mediterranean Night, Asian & Sushi Night, Moroccan Night, Italian Night and Indian Night. Their meal times are as follows:

  • Breakfast: 7:30am – 10:00am
  • Lunch: 12:30pm – 2:30pm
  • Dinner: 7:30pm – 9:30pm

The MANTA restaurant is an overwater establishment that opens for lunch and dinner. They offer an à la carte menu with a candlelit dinner option for those who want a more romantic setting. Their meal times are as follows with reservations being required:

  • Lunch: 12:30pm – 2:30pm
  • Dinner: 7:30pm – 9:30pm

Indulge in teppanyaki and Japanese cuisine at the Japanese Garden restaurant. This is also an à la carte establishment and it offers a beachfront view as you dine under the shade of the trees. Japanese Garden’s meal times skip breakfast and go straight for lunch and dinner.

The last restaurant is called Palm Square and is a beachside location that offers grilled seafood along with beef, among other dishes as well. The restaurant is an open air establishment that has shisha, pillowed seating on the floor and lanterns for an unbeatable ambiance.

Onto Cocoon Maldives’ bar selections! Out of their two bars, the Loabi Loabi Bar (‘loabi’ means love in Dhivehi, the Maldivian language) is their main bar and is open for 14 hours from 10:00am to 12:00am. They offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic options for those that just want to relax and skip the partying, which happens on a weekly basis! They’ve got Maldivian Night, Latino Night, White Party, karaoke, live music and DJ sets that turns the night into an unforgettable memory.

Their second bar is the Kurum-Bar which is on the beachside. The name is a play on a Maldivian word known as ‘kurumba’, which means coconut. They offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks along with lunch, where fresh fish is cooked along with brunch options that’ll have you coming back every day. They’re open from 10:00am – 6:30pm.

Activities and Adventures

Cocoon Maldives has activities that cater to the adventurous and the laid back. Activities that take you to the most wondrous underwater locations and jaw-dropping island views and everything in between.

One of the best parts of visiting Maldives is its underwater beauty. A lot of resorts in Maldives realise this and took it upon themselves to build dive centres on their islands to conduct dive operations and integrate watersports into their list of activities and Cocoon is no different. The Cocoon Maldives Watersports & Dive Centre was made to give guests access to the amazing location the island has to offer. Dive with them to see turtles, grey reef sharks, manta rays, napoleon fish and more. Run by Oceanico Maldives, the Cocoon Maldives Watersports & Dive Centre is a PADI certified centre, capable of teaching beginners, sending experts on their dream dives and providing thrill seekers the opportunity to go riding around in jet ski’s, a banana boat, go snorkelling and more.

If you go to Maldives, it is an absolute must to experience fishing. Before tourism was Maldives’ biggest moneymaker, it was fishing and almost everyone knew how to do it. To this day, people still go fishing for fun out into the open ocean with their friends, leaving their worries behind to take in the sea salt and never-ending ocean views. Cocoon Maldives offers a Maldivian Sports Fishing excursion during sunrise and sunset so if you’re a fishing enthusiast, you’ll be in good hands.

For the explorers, the resort has activities for you as well. Activities such as sunset fishing, a dolphin cruise, exploring a local island, Picnic Island excursion, big game fishing, night fishing and Private Sandbank affairs.

For those that are travelling their kids, Cocoon Maldives has something for the little ones too. The Kids Club of Cocoon ensures your child doesn’t get bored and is entertained with tons of activities. They have a large outdoor playground, an indoor playground that features an interactive learning area, a cinema room, and a kids pool. They also have day-long activities such as Treasure Hunt, Kids Pool Party, Scavenger Hunt, Mini Olympics and more. They also have cooking classes for those that want to relax a little, along with snack time as well. The facility is complimentary for those aged between 3 – 12 years old and is open from 10:00am – 6:00pm.

The resort also conducts photography sessions upon request, for you to cherish the moments that you want to remember forever. Their in-house studio, aptly named IMStudio provides such experiences. Cocoon hotel also provides entertainment that is both exciting and family friendly, perfect for couples and families alike.

The Cocoon Collection recently opened the Bawe Island resort on 1st June 2024. An exceptional location off the coast of Zanzibar that showcases a beauty like no other, where luxury and privacy coalesce into a fine experience. Bawe Island Zanzibar has 70 villas located on a 30 hectare island, making privacy an overflowing commodity.

They also have four restaurants with a Dine Around concept, making socialising and absolute blast. The two resorts share similarities and differences in activities as well, with the similarities being fishing, jet skiing, waterskiing and more. Bawe Island has parasailing, water bicycling and sea bobbing, a strong sense for watersports, while Cocoon Maldives has water activities and land activities as well, as mentioned right above.

Cocoon Maldives has dedicated a huge chunk of their energy to environmental efforts in the Maldives. There are four main things they’re doing to help Maldives’ ecosystem.

The first thing is their use of renewable energy sources. The resort makes use of multiple solar panels for renewable energy that in turn powers their island. Secondly, they’ve optimised their recycling practices to come out with the absolute minimum environmental impact by decreasing waste generation and with responsible waste disposal.

Thirdly, they have taken to the seas and have joined forces with local organisations to collaborate on how they can protect the marine wilderness as a whole, supported local projects, ensure fishing practices are sustainable and taken steps to preserve the marine ecosystem. Lastly, they have daily eco-friendly practices they uphold such as reduction in water consumption, making use of eco-conscious landscaping methods and more.
